Risky Summerbee & the Honeythief was formed in 2007 with
noteworthy line up of Risky Summerbee (vocals/guitar/keyboards), Erwin
Zubiyan (guitars/keyboards), Nadya Hatta (piano/keyboards), Doni
Kurniawan (bass), and Sevri Hadi (drums/toys). The band’s tendency to
dig musical ideas has brought them the reputation of being an
experimental band in a wide sense. However, some of their works have
been associated with genres such as pop, folk, blues, jazz, progressive
rock, psychedelic and contemporary music. Their strong rapport to the visual and performing arts scene has
brought their sensibility of creative works in their music and their
gigs. After a series of line up changes in their first year, Risky
Summerbee – a literature graduate- invited Erwin Zubiyan –music degree
drop outs - whom he met and played together in 2004 playing jazzy
version of The Jam’s “That’s Entertainment” and Echo & the
Bunnymen’s “Seven Seas”. Erwin then introduced a drummer, an old high
school friend named Sevri Hadi – in and out his studies in
Communication. To complete the rhythm section, Doni – bassist from
Risky’s previous band - was brought in. The quartet did a signifiant
break in an interdisciplinary performance entitled “She Flies Tomorrow”.
Days before the gig, Risky sent mobile messages to selected friends
asking them to come and see the concert, one of which was Nadya Hatta –
an architect student whom he noted playing piano in several shows a few
times before. Later that year, Nadya found herself playing on the band’s
another self initiated experimental concert entitled “The Rise and Fall
of a Scoundrel Queen.” – Scoundrel Queen was performed November 2007
and left positive remarks as to their musical works and led doors to
other challenging musical works. The 5 musicians gradually brought each of their musical strength and
produced strong compositions and tuneful songs. The year 2008 saw the
band’s collaborative works with Slamet Gundono in “Memoirs of Gandari” –
a pleasant modern – traditional musical meet. An involvement in theater
work with Corrina Manara – a Dutch based theater director in an
adaptation of Anton Chekov’s “The Seagull.”And notably on Teater Garasi’s grand contemporary dance/theater/image production of
“Je.ja.l.an.”Their first album is released in early 2009 under their own record
label – dialectic recordings. The 11 tracks album entitled “The Place I
Wanna Go” presents rich and various music forms. The quintet also
contributed to the making of “John Peel Day 2008” held first time in
Indonesia. On that occasion the band did a cover of Echo and the
Bunnymen “Seven Seas” in their notably progressive style. A song that
actually initiated them together in the first place – some three years
before their establishment. Strange!
SHE FLIES TOMORROW
(2007.Album : The Place I Wanno Go )
Yoohoo, Do you know what time it is?
The dawn is gone or the birds have come too late
It is time…
Yes I know, I know what time it is
It’s not the time to specify or testify with you
Cos you’re flying flying flying
Well I can still see you standing by the road
It’s a feeling like yours that feels like mine
I want to stroll that road again, someday I will
And when the eyes meet and we’re walking and talking for evermore
I can still see you standing by the road
The feelings are here, no don’t deny it
You want to stroll that road again. I bet you will
And when the eyes meet and we’re walking and talking for evermore
Draw some kind of faith
To the direction of your fate
And somewhere along the line
I can still see you flying flying flying flying
Well I can still see you standing by the road
It’s a feeling like yours that feels like mine
I want to stroll that road again, someday I will
And when the eyes meet and we’re walking and talking for evermore
I can still see you standing by the road
The feelings are here, no don’t deny it
You want to stroll that road again. I bet you will
And when the eyes meet and we’re walking and talking for evermore
Standing by the road
cos the feelings are here
standing by I’m standing by
